What Is A Major Similarity And Dfference Between An Object Oriented Database And A Relational Database?

Trying to understand the break down of these DB’s
Once I know the similarities and difference; how can I reconcile the differences between currently popular object oriented (OO) developments (GUI and processing layers) in concert with also popular relational databases to persistently hold and flexibly manipulate the data for the application?
Can anyone point me in the rigth direction? Even if it is a reading link please. Thanks!
